Wei Jianguo,60, made the decision to permanently reside at the airport in 2008 after an argument with his family over his smoking and drinking habits. “My family told me if I wanted to stay, I had to quit smoking and drinking. If I couldn’t do that, I had to give them all my monthly government allowance of 1,000 yuan ($150). But then how would I buy my cigarettes and alcohol?,” Wei explained to China Daily.

He relocated to the airport’s Terminal 2 and is currently out of a job since he was fired from his last job during his 40s.

Six other people also live in the airport and officials reportedly have no issue with them staying there as told by a senior sanitation worker. A video of Wei eating noodles at the terminal went viral after security officers asked him to leave. Moments later, he returned to his “home.”

“I get expelled, lay low, and then I come back, just like old times. At least I have my freedom in the airport.”
