Man Finds 9-Carat Diamond He Thought Was Glass In An Arkansas State Park

This past Labor Day, 33-year-old Kevin Kinard found a 9-carat diamond, that he initially thought was glass, in an Arkansas State Park.

On the holiday this year, Kinard and friends ventured off to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, AK, a park that boasts 37.5 acres of land perfect for “diamond digging” as it is known as the world’s eighth-largest diamond-bearing volcanic crater.

While Park Interpreter Waymon Cox says one or two diamonds are found on the daily, at about 20 to 25-points (or a fourth of a carat), Kinard’s discovery, after four hours of digging, turned out to be the park’s second-largest diamond ever found after a 16-carat diamond in 1975. After being told of his 9-carat discovery, Kinard says, “I broke down a little and started tearing up. It was a very humbling experience. I thank God for everything that I have, so I think it was the Lord.”

Since leaving the park, Kinard took the diamond to a safe deposit box at a bank where he works. He has yet to get it appraised, as he just wants to enjoy the moment. He says, “I’m not sure what it’s worth, but I can’t do anything with a 9-carat diamond. My boss said, ‘You may be a millionaire. Are you going to quit?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ I’m too young for that. I’d still work. I’m just a regular guy.”
