A man fights for his life after drinking a liquid nitrogen cocktail that was served during a corporate Christmas party, turning a celebratory event into a medical emergency in Moscow, Russia.
Man Fights for His Life After Drinking Liquid Nitrogen Cocktail at Cryo Show
According to Dexerto, the incident took place at the Igra Stolov (“Game of Tables”) culinary studio, where guests attended a corporate holiday celebration featuring a live cryo cocktail show. The experience was led by an unnamed celebrity chef, who reportedly used liquid nitrogen to rapidly cool alcoholic beverages. While liquid nitrogen is commonly used in professional kitchens for visual effects, it becomes extremely dangerous if consumed before fully evaporating.
Witnesses say 38-year-old Sergey was encouraged to drink the cocktail immediately after it was served. Video footage from the event reportedly shows Sergey taking the drink before suddenly collapsing in visible agony just seconds later. Medical experts explain that liquid nitrogen can rapidly expand when it comes into contact with body heat, creating catastrophic internal pressure if ingested.
Witnesses Say No Safety Warnings Were Given
Several attendees claim they were never warned about the risks associated with liquid nitrogen cocktails. According to witness statements, no instructions were provided regarding the need to wait for the nitrogen to evaporate before drinking. Guests also said they were unaware the substance could cause severe internal injuries if consumed improperly.
Liquid nitrogen boils at –196°C (–321°F) and instantly expands into gas when warmed. If swallowed, it can cause internal burns, ruptured organs, and severe trauma within seconds.
Experts say venues using cryogenic elements in food or drink should provide clear safety briefings, especially when alcohol is involved, as impaired judgment increases risk.
Doctors Say Liquid Nitrogen Caused Stomach Rupture
Doctors later confirmed that the liquid nitrogen expanded inside Sergey’s stomach, causing it to rupture, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate intervention.
He was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery to repair the damage. Medical professionals stated that the injuries were severe but survivable due to the rapid response.
Following surgery, Sergey was listed in stable condition, and doctors said he is expected to recover.
Medical experts warn that ingesting liquid nitrogen can be fatal if not treated immediately, with some cases resulting in permanent organ damage.
