According to Newsweek, Montpelier Police identified the suspect as Fred Seavey,56. He died in a car accident on July 1 after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a highway median weeks after defacing a Black Lives Matter mural. Investigators also reported Seavey had no listed address at the time of his death and didn’t wear a seatbelt. The DNA samples found at the scene of the accident matched on the cans of spray paint Seavey used to deface the project and investigators also used witness statements and surveillance footage to positively identify him posthumously.
On June 13, the mural was painted in yellow letters in front of the Montpelier statehouse where hundreds of residents gathered to celebrate the moment. Less than a day later, Seavey spray painted the letters and covered them with mud, dirt, and oil. If Seavey was found before his death, police would have charged him with unlawful mischief, burglary, and petit larceny.
