The man only identified by his surname Chen filed for divorce from his wife, Wang, last year after a five-year marriage. Although she hesitated to agree with the divorce, Wang asked for financial compensation for the housework she did throughout the marriage and the childcare she provided for their son since Chen did neither. The Fangshang District Court said in their ruling that he is ordered to pay her monthly alimony of 2,000 yuan($7,700) and a one-time payment of 50,000 yuan for the housework she did from 2015 tp 2020.

A judge said during a press conference that the decision was made due to the new civil code in the country where a spouse is entitled to receive compensation from a divorce if they had more responsibilities such as childcare, housework, and caring for elderly relatives.
