Man Bedridden For Life After Selling His Kidney To Buy An iPhone

A man who sold his kidney in exchange for an iPhone when he was 17 is now experiencing health issues from the unsanitary surgery.

News AU reports Wang Shangkun, now 25, sold his kidney in order to buy his own iPhone since his family was too poor to afford new Apple products. Since the surgery, Shangkun developed an infection since his remaining kidney failed and caused him to remain bedridden for the rest of his life. He further explained that he sold his kidney to online buyers for $2,525.

However, the men who purchased Shangkun’s kidney faced legal consequences for the illegal transaction. Police arrested five people and the surgeon who performed the surgery in connection with Shangkun’s case.

Authorities compensated Shangkung’s family with a $200,000 settlement but the young man has to remain bedridden for the rest of his life.
