Mel Horne, a 44-year-old, was taken into custody on various charges related to possessing dangerous weapons, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend security screenings at the center’s north side for approximately an hour, according to CNBC. The arrest occurred during the week of remembrance for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29 and is currently lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. An investigation into Horne’s intentions is underway, but police have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the Capitol, Congress, or the surrounding community.

The arrest took place just hours before President-elect Donald Trump attended the Capitol to pay respects to Carter and engage with Republican senators. In spite of the increased security measures, Trump’s visit and the ceremonial events proceeded as scheduled.

“Our officers know they cannot let their guard down for one second. It is this constant focus and attention to detail that helps keep this campus safe,” said USCP Chief Thomas Manger.

Carter’s casket will remain at the Capitol Rotunda until Thursday, where it will remain until his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.
