In a disturbing incident from last summer, a 57-year-old man from Lake Oswego, Oregon, is facing serious legal charges after allegedly administering sedative-l smoothies to three 12-year-old girls during a sleepover hosted for his daughter. Michael Meyden, who has since pleaded not guilty to the authorities, surrendered to the Clackamas County Jail, facing multiple felonies and misdemeanors related to the event. His bail was $50,000 during his arraignment in Clackamas County Circuit Court.

According to court documents, Meyden is accused of spiking mango smoothies with benzodiazepine, a powerful depressant that affects the nervous system, and serving them to the young guests. The case came to light following a police investigation initiated on August 26 after the girls were taken to Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland. There, they tested positive for benzodiazepine. The girls recounted feeling unusually groggy and experiencing periods of blackout, raising suspicion of being drugged, as reported by Oregon Live.
Lake Oswego police Detective Nicole Palmeri detailed how the incident unfolded in a probable cause affidavit. The girls described Meyden as overly involved during the sleepover, even directing them to bed. They also noted that Meyden prepared and insisted they drink the smoothies, which appeared to have “tiny white chunks” within them. Despite one girl’s refusal to drink the smoothie, Meyden persisted, preparing another in an attempt to convince her. The affidavit further reveals Meyden’s unsettling behavior, including instances where he checked if the girls were asleep by holding his finger under one girl’s nose and moving another’s arm and body on the bed. This caused one of the girls to send a desperate text message to her mother around 1:43 a.m.: “Mom, please pick me up and say I had a family emergency. I don’t feel safe. I might not respond, but please come get me (crying emoji), Please. Please pick up. Please. PLEASE!!“

The situation escalated when parents, responding to their children’s distress, arrived at Meyden’s home around 3 a.m. to collect their daughters. Meyden initially resisted, suggesting they return in the morning, but the parents insisted on leaving with their children immediately.
The aftermath of the incident left one girl in a notably impaired state, requiring her mother’s assistance for balance and speaking slowly, a clear indication of the sedative’s lingering effects. This led to her parents deciding to take her to the hospital for further evaluation.
Meyden’s personal life also came under scrutiny, with court records indicating a recent divorce and a change in residence to an RV park in Vancouver. At the time of the divorce, Meyden was unemployed, previously working as a human resources director. The case unfolds as Meyden, maintaining his innocence, awaits further legal proceedings.
