The family spoke out during a news conference this weekend and asked the District Attorney of Manhattan to reopen the case. A letter written by a former NYPD officer, Raymond Wood, revealed he worked as an undercover and confessed that he was told by his bosses to get the civil rights leader’s bodyguards arrested by manipulating them into committing crimes before his assassination on Feb. 21, 1965.

According to TMZ, Wood said if the men were not arrested, security would have been much tighter at the Audubon Ballroom since they were hired to work the door. He added that the FBI and NYPD fully planned this out.

The family is asking for the case to be reopened so a further investigation can be conducted based on Wood’s testimony. Malcolm himself said his security detail was limited after his leave from the Nation of Islam. At the time of his death, he was 39-years-old.
