Macy Gray Says American Flag Is ‘Dated, Divisive & Incorrect,’ Calls For New US Flag In Juneteenth Essay
On this year’s Juneteenth holiday, Macy Gray calls for a new US flag, claiming the current American flag is “tattered, dated, divisive and incorrect.” Macy says, “Sixty-two years later, in 2021, we have changed and it’s time for a reset, a transformation. One that represents all states and all of us.”
The “I Try” hit singer penned an op-ed this week for MarketWatch, and in it, she argued her case for officials to update Old Glory, as it contains a controversial history like the Confederate flag. In addition to years-old history and wars, Macy notes the recent events of January 6 at the US Capitol. She says things are beyond repair after so-called patriots dragged the flag through the mud (figuratively).

Macy also claims the number of stars are off, correcting the numeric figure to 52, adding Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico — two regions lobbying for statehood for years. Commenting on the color of the stars, she says they should reflect every skin tone of melanin, and that the white stripes should be off-white. As for the blue square and red stripes (which stand for vigilance, perseverance and valor), are fine as-is, because the U.S.A. still stands for those qualities.
