In a statement to PEOPLE, the company said Chip Wilson “does not speak for lululemon, and his comments do not reflect our company views or beliefs. Chip has not been involved with the company since his resignation from the board in 2015, and we are a very different company today. Lululemon is committed to creating and fostering an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment throughout our organization and across our communities.”

Wilson bluntly expressed his views about the company’s “whole diversity and inclusion thing” in a Forbes interview: “And I think the definition of a brand is that you’re not everything to everybody… You’ve got to be clear that you don’t want certain customers coming in,” he explained. Wilson also compared the company’s initiatives to the Gap.

In November 2020, Lululemon launched its IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy) initiative, signaling its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse corporate culture. Led by CEO Calvin McDonald and the senior leadership team, the company pledged to increase funding, expand training and development programs, and utilize its brand and influence to advocate for change. However, recent reports have highlighted challenges in the integration of the IDEA initiative, suggesting that Lululemon still has work to do in creating an environment that is truly welcoming to all.

Lululemon’s IDEA initiative addresses the lack of diversity and inclusion within the company and the broader industry. The company can invest in programs and initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by increasing funding. Expanding training and development opportunities ensures employees can access resources that foster understanding and empathy. Additionally, Lululemon’s commitment to using its brand and voice to advocate for change demonstrates a dedication to promoting inclusivity beyond its walls.
