Cynthia Erivo is out here making history like it’s a weekly routine. The powerhouse singer-actress just scored her second Golden Globe nomination for Lead Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and the moment is bigger than just another nod on her résumé.
With this latest recognition for “Wicked,” Erivo becomes the first Black woman ever to be nominated twice in that category since the Globes split acting awards by genre back in 1951. That’s over 70 years of Hollywood gatekeeping, shaken up by one woman with a voice strong enough to rattle ceilings.
And trust, Erivo felt the moment. She hopped on her Instagram story straight from rehearsals for Dracula West End to soak in the news, writing: ”WOW!! What lovely news to receive live from the rehearsal room of @draculawestend. It’s an honor to be nominated once again for this film.”
She wasn’t done there. She kept the love flowing: ”It has been a beautiful journey to play this character, and this is the cherry on top. This entire journey wouldn’t have been possible without the wonderful leadership of my brother and glorious director @jonmchu and producer extraordinaire everyone could only wish for, Marc Platt.”
The Wicked universe is clearly having its moment. “Wicked: For Good” pulled in five nominations total, including one for Erivo’s co-star Ariana Grande—who’s stirring up award season buzz of her own.
Grande is officially in the running for Best Supporting Actress, making this year’s lineup feel like a full-on emerald reunion.
Ever gracious, Erivo wrapped up her statement with a shoutout to Grande and appreciation for the recognition, congratulating her co-star on the nomination and thanking the Golden Globes for the honor.
From the rehearsal room to Hollywood’s biggest stages, Cynthia Erivo is proving again— that when Black women shine, they do it with range, reverence, and receipts. And award season is clearly watching.
