A Louisiana Sheriff’s Deputy is going viral after helping a speeding driver with his necktie after learning he was headed toward a loved one’s funeral.

During a recent traffic stop in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, a sheriff’s deputy decided to help out a speeding driver once he learned how tough of a day he was having. According to a post on the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office’s official Facebook, Deputy Dustin Byers stopped a driver last weekend for speeding on Highway 21.

Upon being pulled over, the man explained to Deputy Byers that he was on his way to a funeral and was having a rough day. The entire incident was caught on camera and is now going viral.

On Saturday (June 22), the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office published its post with the title: “🚔 A traffic stop comes with a side of compassion.” The full Facebook post reads:

“Deputy Dustin Byers with the 4th District recently stopped a driver for speeding on Highway 21. The man explained he was on his way to a funeral and was having a tough day. To top it off, he couldn’t get his tie right. Without hesitation, Deputy Byers helped him out…not just with the knot, but with a moment of kindness he won’t forget. REMINDER: compassion still exists, even on the side of the road.”

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office shared the caption with an image of Deputy Dustin Byers and the man he pulled over standing on the side of the road. Deputy Byers is seen leaning in towards the man as he holds the two sides of his long blue necktie.

While Deputy Byers adjusts his tie, the man holds his arms up and out of the way allowing the deputy to help him out. As the sweet and compassionate interaction takes place, another deputy is seen standing near the police vehicle watching. As of Thursday, June 26, the post has been shared more than 2,500 times, has more than 1,800 comments, and over 22,000 likes and other emoji reactions.

Louisiana Sheriff’s Deputy Still Cited Speeding Driver After Helping Him With Necktie Upon Learning He Was Headed To Funeral

Now, if you’re wondering if the speeding driver was completely let off the hook, PEOPLE Magazine has an update. The publication reported that when they contacted the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, officials confirmed that the man did receive a speeding citation. However, the sheriff’s office refused to comment any further.

While the sheriff’s office declined to comment further on the incident, several users on Facebook had no problem doing so. One woman commented, “This right here is a powerful reminder that kindness knows no uniform, no badge, and no boundaries. In a moment that could have simply been about a traffic stop, Deputy Byers chose compassion — turning frustration into dignity and stress into support.”

The woman continued, “It’s the small gestures that leave the biggest impact. Thank you, Deputy Byers, for showing that humanity still lives on the roadside, in a helping hand, and in a tied knot. May we all strive to lead with empathy, no matter the circumstance.
