Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Slashes LAPD Budget Amid ‘Defund Police’ Movement
Amid the “Defund Police” movement, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti slashes the LAPD budget, that was due for an increase. On Wednesday, Garcetti announced a series of reforms aimed at reducing police misconduct, and defunding police was a part of that plan.
Although the city’s budget has already been impacted by the coronavirus crisis, Garcetti says the Los Angeles Police Department can expect a $100-150 million cut from its proposed $1.86 billion funding. Garcetti then says he plans to ask City Administrative Officer Richard Llewellyn to reallocate $250 million to black communities for health and education.

Another policy for reform will require officers to intervene and report if they see fellow officers engaging in inappropriate use of force. Garcetti adds, “Nobody hates a bad cop more than a good cop. We have to make sure there is no culture of silence, there is no culture of acquiescence. That there is no culture of being a bystander. There is only right or wrong on our streets and on streets across America.
