LMPD Declares “State Of Emergency” In Preparation For Decision In Breonna Taylor Case

This Monday, the Louisville Metro Police Department announced a state of emergency as it prepares for a grand jury decision in the Breonna Taylor case.

In a letter sent by LMPD Interim Chief Rob Schroeder, addressed to all personnel, reads in part: “To ensure we have the appropriate level of staffing to provide for public safety services and our policing functions, effective immediately the LMPD will operate under the emergency staffing and reporting guidelines as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Reponse Plan and collective bargaining agreements until further notice.”

As The Hill notes, LMPD made the decision earlier today to also cancel all requested off days for officers effective immediately. It was said the big move came after talks among department leaders about their expectations for a possible announcement in the Taylor case being made soon: “Effective immediately, all off-days are hereby cancelled and vacation requests that have not already been submitted and approved are cancelled until further notice.”

As we have previously reported, Taylor, 26, was shot and killed in her own home by LMPD narcotics officers serving a warrant at her apartment back in March. Her death has sparked more than 100 days of protests around the city.

This latest news about Taylor’s case comes just a few weeks after Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) signaled that a major announcement would be made when they had reached a decision, though he didn’t offer a concrete timeline.
