You may know Aja Naomi King for her portrayals of iconic characters, notably Michaela Pratt in the highly acclaimed series “How to Get Away With Murder,” and films such as “A Birth Of A Nation.” King’s exceptional talent once again graces the screen in the widely praised Apple TV+ series “Lessons in Chemistry,” where she embodies the multifaceted character of Harriet Sloane. As a dynamic activist, devoted mother, and loving wife, Harriet forms a profound connection with the series’ lead character, Elizabeth Zott, portrayed by the talented Brie Larson. We had the chance to sit down with King as she shed light on her impactful performance as Harriet and the character’s significance within the series compared to the novel.

King shared that she found the reimagined storyline intriguing, particularly its focus on the challenges faced by Sugar Hill and Harriet Sloane’s activism against the Highway Commission’s destruction of her home and community. King shared that playing Sloane’s character, allowed her to delve into her experiences as a Black woman during that era, encompassing her roles as a mother, wife, and her friendship with Elizabeth. King also shared that her prior roles and experiences from her family helped shape her version of Sloane. Her portrayal makes the series and makes it an all the more powerful one.

The series also does a great job of tackling issues of racial discrimination and sexism that were heavily prevalent at the time through candid conversations among its characters and emphasizing the plight of women in a world dominated by white men.
