Lena Waithe To Voice First Openly LBGTQ Character In New Disney Movie

Lena Waithe is set to voice the first openly LBGTQ character for Disney-Pixar’s upcoming animated film “Onward”.

According to Fox News, Lena Waithe will be voicing the character, Officer Specter, a purple cyclops who is in a relationship with a woman. During one of the movie’s scenes, Officer Spencer and her partner pull over a driver who says he’s distracted by his girlfriend’s sons. Waithe’s character noted she could relate to his situation and says “My girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out.”

The film’s producer Kori Rae said during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment that the scene just happened when the movie was being written.

“The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted,”

Director Dan Scanlon said in a statement that he wanted “Onward” to be set in a modern world despite it being a fantasy animated film. The film stars Chris Pratt and Tom Hollard where two elf brothers are living in their suburban neighborhood.
