The comments were made during a conversation with ESPN’s NBA reporter Rachel Nichols, who accidentally recorded the conversation which was disseminated by an unidentified ESPN employee. Nichols ranted on how she was approached by ESPN officials to do sideline reporting instead of hosting during the Finals and shared the work with Maria Taylor. She denied the offer because she knew that Taylor would be given more opportunities to do hosting duties full-time and it would jeopardize her career. She also noted that the company made that decision to prove how diverse they are by giving the opportunity to a black woman.
In response to his comments, Mendelsohn spoke to CNBC, “I made a stupid, careless comment rooted in privilege and I am sincerely sorry.”
“I shouldn’t have said it or even thought it,” Mendelsohn added. “I work to support these movements and know that the people affected by these issues never get to be exhausted or have nothing left. I have to continue to check my privilege and work to be a better ally.”
