Lawmakers Push President Biden To Offer Recurring $2,000 Stimulus Checks

While Congress is still going back-and-forth on President Joe Biden’s request for $1.9 trillion in coronavirus relief funding — which is expected to include a third stimulus check pegged at $1,400 — several Democratic lawmakers are pushing for an even bigger COVID relief package: $2,000 monthly payments until the pandemic has come to end.

Democratic rep Ilhan Omar and 50 other House members are trying to make this happen. According to a signed letter sent to Mr. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the group is urging the Biden administration to back such a policy. It was noted that the January 28 letter also includes the signatures of other leading House progressives such as Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

“One more check is not enough during this public health and economic crisis,” they wrote. “Many families cannot afford to wait for eight months between payments. To truly build back better, families need stability and certainty through ongoing relief — they cannot be at the mercy of congressional gridlock,” CBS News quotes.

This would be the second known time a recurring stimulus check has been proposed. Last year Harris introduced a bill in the Senate that would have provided $2,000 a month for each adult and child in the U.S. until the pandemic ended, although the effort failed to gain traction.
