Family Of Georgia Man “Eaten Alive” By Bed Bugs In Jail Reach $4 Million Settlement

The family of LaShawn Thompson, who tragically died in a Georgia jail cell back in September covered in bed bugs, has reached a $4 million settlement with Fulton County. This settlement comes after an independent autopsy determined that Thompson’s death was caused by “complications due to severe neglect,” and he was essentially “neglected to death.”

The conditions in Thompson’s cell were described as nothing short of horrific, with experts noting that while bed bug bites are rarely deadly, extreme cases of prolonged exposure can lead to anemia or dangerous allergic reactions. This case has sparked an investigation into the conditions within the Fulton County Jail system by the US Department of Justice. In response, the sheriff’s office has taken steps to address the issue, including updating protocols and transferring inmates to other facilities.

Fulton County commissioners voted unanimously to approve the $4 million settlement, recognizing the immense suffering and neglect that Thompson experienced during his time in custody. A private autopsy revealed that he had been covered in sores and bites from bed bugs and lice, and his cause of death was determined to be severe neglect, including dehydration, rapid weight loss, malnutrition, and lack of medication for his diagnosed schizophrenia. The autopsy also revealed a severe insect infestation on Thompson’s body, highlighting the extent of the neglect he endured. Attorneys representing Thompson’s family firmly believe that the authorities at the county jail are responsible for his untimely death.

Famed civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who was part of Thompson’s family’s legal team, expressed that while the monetary settlement provides some relief for the family, their ultimate goal is to ensure that no one else experiences the same level of neglect and suffering that Thompson did. The $4 million settlement serves as a step towards holding those accountable for their actions or lack thereof. It is a recognition of the profound loss and pain that Thompson’s family has endured and a reminder that justice must prevail even within correctional facilities.

This tragic case sheds light on the importance of adequate care and attention within correctional institutions. Inmates, regardless of their circumstances, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Neglecting their basic needs, such as hygiene and medical attention, can have dire consequences, as demonstrated by Thompson’s case. The settlement serves as a reminder to correctional facilities across the country to prioritize the well-being and safety of their inmates. It is crucial to ensure that proper protocols are in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

      • Do you realize that jail is made up of over 90% black correction officers and staff. Instead of blaming it on racism, maybe say the truth. He was severely neglected by staff.

  1. It is the racism in this Country that still believe that people of color should not be treated with dignity regardless if they are in prison they Should still be treated as humans. These people treat there animals better than they would treat a person of color and ultimately god will judge them

  3. It’s disgraceful the conditions in in this Fulton prison but similar conditions exist all over our country. All the people who saw the condition any of these prisoners were living in and did not do anything about it should be fired. I don’t know how anyone with a conscience could have looked at that young man suffering and done nothing.
