Former NBA star Lamar Odom is opening up about his past substance abuse ahead of his new documentary. As he prepares for the release of The Death and Life of Lamar Odom, Odom appeared on the Cousins podcast hosted by Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter. During the conversation, he shared direct and detailed comments about his drug use during his NBA career.
In the interview, Odom stated that his drug use primarily occurred during the NBA offseason. He made it clear that while he struggled with addiction, he maintained that his substance use did not happen during the regular season.
Odom Reflects On Drug Use During NBA Offseason
During the podcast appearance, Odom spoke candidly about his history with drugs. He did not avoid the topic. Instead, he addressed it directly.
“I loved drugs. You’re talking to a real addict… Summertime I did drugs I ain’t gonna front… I had some great cocaine summers… I should be where yall at in the hall of fame. Off of straight talent,” Odom said.
He explained that his drug use occurred in the summer months, which typically align with the NBA offseason. Therefore, he suggested that his performance during the regular season remained strong despite his addiction.
In addition, Odom reflected on expectations placed on him from a young age. “I had people coming to me when I was 13 years old saying ‘no doubt in my mind you’ll be a hall of famer.’ Let’s keep it real, I was shooting a reality show in season. That mean I was playing in the games still won 6MOY shooting a reality show. So I know I had the grit and makeup to do it. But overall greatness and legacy, yeah I hurt that by abusing drugs. 100%.”
His comments acknowledged both his natural talent and the impact of substance abuse on his career legacy. He specifically mentioned winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award while filming a reality show, highlighting what he described as his focus and ability during the season.
According to reporting by ESPN, Odom previously detailed his struggles with addiction and recovery following his near-fatal overdose in 2015.
