L.A. County Sheriff Claims Inmates Are Infecting Themselves With Coronavirus To Get Out Of Jail Early

On Monday, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva revealed that about two dozen inmates at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic attempted and somewhat succeeded, to infect themselves with coronavirus to get out of jail early.

Villanueva explained that this all occurred mid-April. Apparently, their department saw a large increase in confirmed cases out of nowhere and decided to figure out what was going on. Following an investigation, they found a bunch of guys living in one block deliberately trying to infect each other with COVID-19 from behind bars.

According to TMZ, Villanueva played the surveillance footage for a few people from the police department which appeared to show several inmates hanging out in a common area. From there, they appear to pass around what Villanueva says is a cup of hot water, as well as one face mask they’d each put on; all in hopes of getting infected and appearing sick in front of a judge to get an early release and placed on house arrest instead.

As the news site notes, their plan somewhat worked as Villanueva says 21 of those guys (out of 50 in the block) caught the ‘rona. However, it’s unclear if any of them got let out early after the stunt.
