Chairwoman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Kathryn Barger told reporters Wednesday that she just signed a proclamation declaring a local emergency:

“I want to reiterate that this is not a response rooted in panic,” she said. County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis said the proclamation allows local officials “to further draw down resources from both the federal and state level of government.” Health officials for the City of Pasadena and City of Long Beach said they, also plan to declare a local emergency later Wednesday.

The new cases in Los Angeles County bring the state’s total to 35, more than any other state, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As we previously reported, the novel coronavirus has killed more than 3,000 people, the vast majority in mainland China. There are now more than 88,000 global cases, with infections on every continent except Antarctica. So far, nine people here in the US have died after being infected. The are currently 126 confirmed cases across 13 states.

President Donald Trump spoke out on the outbreak here in the US. Although he said Americans are at “very low risk” he recently donated his presidential check to help fight the deadly virus.
