Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash: Two Families Settle With LA County For $2.5 Million Over Alleged Photo Sharing Of Deadly Scene

On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors approved a settlement of two federal lawsuits filed by the Altobelli and Mauser families, according to the Los Angeles Times. As we previously reported, in their suits, they said that they suffered emotional distress over the graphic pictures of the crash scene that were reportedly taken and shared by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and firefighters.

Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and the others died in January 2020 when their helicopter crashed in Calabasas west of Los Angeles in foggy weather. Christina Mauser, 38, an assistant coach for Team Mamba, and three members of the Altobelli family—Alyssa, 14, John, 56, and Keri, 46 were also identified as some of the victims of the deadly crash.

Their suit mirrors one that Vanessa Bryant had first filed against the county in 2020. While Bryant’s trial will go to court in 2022, the other two families reportedly agreed to settle for $1.25 million each.

The settlement comes just a day after Bryant scored a legal win for her trial. Los Angeles County tried to get Bryant to undergo an independent psychiatric evaluation to prove that the leaked photos of the crash caused emotional distress, claiming the distress was caused by the crash itself — not the sharing of photos. A judge ruled that she does NOT have to take one.
