Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear Activates National Guard Amid Breonna Taylor Protests
While the protests continue over the murder of Minneapolis’ George Floyd, in Kentucky and areas surrounding, protests blaze on for Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old EMT who was killed by Louisville Police in March. Subsequently, Gov. Andy Beshear has activated the National Guard after a second night of protests.
As some demonstrators have become violent and destructive, Gov. Beshear announced his calling in the Guard to “ensure the safety of everybody and help keep peace.” He adds, “What we have seen, especially last night, and what our intelligence says is going to happen tonight are outside groups moving in, trying to create violence to harm everybody who is on those streets. In addition, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has implemented a dusk-to-dawn curfew, adding, “The tone clearly changed last night. The number of people on our street clearly changed last night, as well. This turned from being a peaceful protest into violence and terrorism and looting on the streets of our city.” The National Guard is set to arrive today (May 30).
For those unknowing of her story, Breonna Taylor was a 26-year-old EMT who was fatally shot by Louisville Police in March, while she and her boyfriend were sleeping in their apartment.
Her family says that Police busted into her home without warning, in search of a suspect who was already in their custody. Officers shot Breonna eight times, killing her. Her boyfriend remains behind bars and officers involved have taken zero accountable for her death.
