Yu-Gi-Oh Creator Kazuki Takahashi Found Dead In Sea After Apparent Snorkeling Accident

Kazuki Takahashi, who famously created the popular Yu-Gi-Oh manga comic series, has died, after his body was discovered off the coast of Nago, in the northern part of Okinawa Island in Japan. It’s believed that the 60-year-old was on a snorkeling trip near the southern island since he was found wearing an underwater mask, fins and a snorkel, an official for the city of Naga shared in a statement.

“We are investigating the case as both a possible accident or crime,” they said, per BBC News. Authorities believe Kazuki had died several days ago given before being found on Wednesday, which they determined by the state of the body, which appeared to have suffered injuries from sharks and other sea creatures in the water. An autopsy is expected to take place to determine the actual cause of his passing. Rescuers located the body 300 meters out to sea and declared him dead at the scene.

Kazuki, who had been working as a manga artist for over four decades, became a household name with his Yu-Gi-Oh anime series, which originally ran from 1996 to 2004. Its popularity around the globe welcomed Kazuki to expand the brand by launching real-life Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards, subsequently becoming one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.

The original release of the series was about a boy named Yugi Mutou who became possessed by an ancient spirit after solving an ancient puzzle known as the Millennium Puzzle. His body becomes a host to a mysterious spirit that has the personality of a gambler. Whenever Yugi or his friends were threatened by danger, the spirit would unleash itself and challenges them to dangerous Shadow Games, subsequently revealing the nature of someone’s heart.

Those who lose the game were usually exposed to a dark punishment called Penalty Game. The mysterious spirit played dice, card, and role-playing board games when taking on his opponents. Yugi later learns that the person now living inside of his puzzle is a nameless Pharaoh who lost his memories and attempts to help him regain his a recollection of his past. But things are proven to be difficult as Yugi and his friends are met with many trials as they wager their lives by facing off against other gamers and the dark power of the Shadow Games.
