Katy Perry sees nothing wrong with couple’s therapy. The American Idol judge speaks highly of seeking counseling regarding her relationship with fiancé Orlando Bloom, which she believes is one of the reasons their romance has remained healthy over the years. During a recent appearance on Chelsea Handler’s podcast Dear Chelsea, the 37-year-old was quizzed by a fan on what advice she had for someone who struggled not to yell at their significant other during arguments.
The Roar chart-topper answered as honestly as she could, stressing that since she knew what it felt like to be yelled at as a child, the rather aggressive tone usually doesn’t result in a peaceful resolution — it actually tends to do the opposite. So, in an effort to share some wise words with the fan, Katy admitted that she attends regular therapy sessions with her beau, which allows them to openly discuss their problems with a mediator. “Orlando and I do couple’s counseling, and we enjoy it because it keeps us in touch, because resentment can build up quickly when you’re both working hard,” she emphasized.
“When you want to come back to being normal in a domesticated environment where you have a child and stuff like that, you have to really learn how to be kind of different out there in the large and in the tiny,” Katy remarked, referring to the contrast between her life in the limelight and the person she is in the comfort of her loved ones. “As a result, that couple’s therapy has been very successful.”

During the lengthy talk, the Chained To The Rhythm singer also weighed in on her decision to separate from Orlando back in 2017 after a year of dating. Katy recollected that the split was brought on during “the hardest year of my life” and that she needed to step away from the relationship to “develop and mature” as a person. She later participated in the Hoffman Process, which is a week-long retreat that helps people overcome unfavorable lifestyle patterns.
“You don’t have a cell phone, so you just get deep into workouts with other people, which is amazing because they constantly stimulate you, and you work through those triggers,” she remembered. “You’ll learn why you have these patterns and habits and where they come from, and whether they’re actually coming from mom or dad. So who yelled at you if you’re yelling? It takes practice. It completely transformed my life.”
On Valentine’s Day 2019, Orlando proposed to the Teenage Dream vocalist, with initial plans to tie the knot the following year in Japan. But those plans were put on hold following the coronavirus pandemic, which meant they would not be able to fly out to their desired location to wed, having planned to arrange a lavish ceremony with friends and family in tow.
It’s still unclear when the pair plan to get married now, but Katy and Orlando are still going strong by the look of things.
