Katherine Johnson, NASA Mathematician Who Inspired ‘Hidden Figures,’ Dies At 101

Socialites, we have some unfortunate news to share this Monday morning. According to multiple reports, Katherine Johnson has sadly passed away.

Johnson was the pioneering mathematician and NASA employee who was pivotal in helping land men on the moon. She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson in the Oscar nominated 2016 film “Hidden Figures” — a film about trailblazing black women whose work at NASA was integral during the Space Race. “Hidden Figures.” Nasa shared a statement through Twitter, confirming the sad news. Johnson was 101 years old.

“We’re saddened by the passing of celebrated #HiddenFigures mathematician Katherine Johnson. Today, we celebrate her 101 years of life and honor her legacy of excellence that broke down racial and social barriers,” NASA said in a tweet on Monday.”

It was said that Johnson’s passing means that Dr. Christine Darden is now the only living “Hidden Figure.” Darden, who sat down with WAVY’s Laura back in 2018, is 77 and still lives in Hampton Roads, Wavy reports.
