Karl-Anthony Towns Says His ‘Soul Has Been Killed Off’ After Losing Mother To COVID-19

On Wednesday (Dec. 23), Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns opened the season with a win over the Detroit Pistons, marking his first NBA game since losing his mother to COVID-19. In a post game interview, he tells reporters how he’s been dealing, stating his “soul has been killed off” ever since.

On April 13, Towns’ mother Jacqueline Towns passed away, and following his first game back on the court, he shares, “You know what, I don’t even recognize most of my other games and years I’ve played and how I felt those days. If I can be honest with y’all for a second, I mean, I don’t really recall or really care. I only know what happened from April 13th on. Because you may see me smiling and stuff, but that Karl died on April 13th. He’s never coming back .I don’t remember that man. I don’t know that man. you’re talking to the physical me, but my soul has been killed off a long time ago.”

He continues, “I want to really answer your question. I really do. But I only know how I feel from April 13th on. To say it’s been day by day is probably an understatement. I think it’s more moment by moment. I’m very fortunate, like I said on TV, I’ve got my kids, my niece and nephew who are at the house waiting for me. My sister, who has been with and always been my mom’s favorite. She says she wasn’t, it was me. I think it’s her. That’s just brother and sister. I want to answer your question, but that man you’re talking about form April 13th or before, I don’t know him. I don’t recall any parts of him.”

In another interview, he says how his win against the Pistons was for his mother. Telling a reporter where he plans to put the game ball, he adds, “I’m gonna put it next to my mom. I’m just happy I got this for her. I told her I wanted to get her this win and get her this ball. I was just happy I was able to get it done.”
