Justin Bieber Boycotting 2021 Grammys Following Criticism Over His R&B Album ‘Changes’
Justin Bieber joins The Weeknd and more in boycotting the 2021 Grammys. In addition to not being invited to perform, Bieber’s decision is reportedly due to his November 2020 criticism against the Academy, who categorized his R&B album ‘Changes‘ as a Pop album.
Last year, Bieber took to social media to blast the Recording Academy for wrongfully labeling his chart-topping masterpiece. He wrote, “To the Grammys, I am flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry. I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said, I set out to make an R&B album. ‘Changes’ was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album, which is very strange to me.”

This year, Bieber is up for four awards: Best Pop Solo Performance with “Yummy;” Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with “Intentions ft. Quavo;” Best Pop Vocal Album with ‘Changes;’ and Best Country Duo/Group Performance with “10,000 Hours” by Dan + Shay ft. Justin Bieber. #Socialites, do you agree with Justin’s actions and reasonings to boycott?
Furthermore, Bieber’s open letter last year went on to read, “I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound. For this not to be put into that category feels weird, considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style, all the way down to the hip-hop drums that were chosen, it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album! To be clear, I absolutely love Pop music, it just wasn’t what I set out to make this time around. My gratitude for feeling respected for my work remains and I am honored to be nominated either way.”
