On the night of April 12, 2008, Anthony Eugene Johnson’s decision to save his life, changed the trajectory of his life. Anthony was attacked by multiple armed men and he defended himself, resulting in the death of one of his attackers. He was then charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon & given the maximum amount of time for his charge.
This was a self defense case that was manipulated to make an innocent black man another number in the justice department. The surveillance video of the incident was lost by the detectives, the DA placed a false gang file on him to aid in persuading the jurors for a guilty verdict, and supporting witnesses were threatened to not testify, amongst a number of other illegal activities facilitated by the legal system.
Anthony had a promising career as an artist, he was in the early process of signing record label deals and was in college studying music. He was an extremely active dad and spent much of his time pursuing his career and supporting his family. Anyone who knows Anthony, knows him for his heart, integrity, charisma and his beautiful spirit. He did what any person who wants to live would do and that was protect himself to make it back home to his family. He was targeted because of his stature and presence in the community. Anthony was actively speaking on police brutality and women’s equality and they wanted to silence his voice.
Although his 30 year sentence should have been enough damage caused to an innocent man’s life. While he’s been incarcerated he has reportedly been poisoned in the county, segregated on a maximum security units under 24-hour isolation for months on end, and put in other numerous life or death situations for his influence and pedigree amongst others being held captive. He is constantly having to prevail against racism, ignorance, and an impoverished environment. This interview was done to shed light on all who are in the justice system wrongfully.
