Back in April, Franklin admitted to driving her SUV into two children because she thought they were of Middle Eastern, African, or Mexican descent.

The 43-year-old has already been charged previously for 25 years, including a mandatory minimum of 17 years for attempted murder charges in Des Moines last May after pleading guilty in state court the month before. The woman will now serve both of her 25-year sentences.

Franklin’s attorney, Matthew Sheeley, has stated, at the time of the crimes she wasn’t in her right state of mind being that she was suffering from a severe case of schizophrenia. According to her lawyer, she was not taking the medication because she was pregnant at the time.

Her lawyer said that Franklin had, “fallen under the spell of conservative news outlets that portrayed immigrants as invaders.”

“In her mind, these people were invading our country and taking our homes and jobs,” Sheeley explained. “She was severely mentally ill, but she was not clinically insane.” Franklin entered the guilty plea for her racially charged crimes in April.

The first victim suffered cuts, bruising, and swelling after Franklin hit him with her Jeep Cherokee outside a West Des Moines apartment complex. Authorities reported that Franklin later drove to a gas station, where she yelled racial slurs at employees and non-white customers and threw items around the store.
