Judge Refuses To Release Bodycam Of Andrew Brown Jr. Police Shooting
A North Carolina judge will not publicly release bodycam footage of the fatal police shooting of Andrew Brown Jr.
Judge Jeffrey Foster ruled that the footage cannot be made public but officials can show Brown’s family within ten days.
“The person requesting release is seeking to obtain evidence to determine legal issues in a current or potential court proceeding,” Foster ruled. “The court finds that release would reveal information regarding a person that is of a highly sensitive personal nature.”
The Judge said that the bodycam may be released between 30 and 45 days to allow officials to investigate the police matter properly and blur the faces of any deputies if they need to.
Ben Crump, a lawyer for the family, said they were “disappointed” in the decision.
“In this modern civil rights crisis where we see black people killed by the police everywhere we look, video evidence is the key to discerning the truth and getting well-deserved justice for victims of senseless murders,” he said. “We refuse to be discouraged and vow to keep the pressure on these agencies until we get the truth. We will not stop saying his name: Andrew Brown Jr.”
Brown’s was killed one day after Derek Chauvin was found guilty for the murder of George Floyd last year.
