In 2009, Gosselin, now 46, and his wife Kate Gosselin, now 48, divorced after 10 years of marriage following cheating allegations. During their time together, the former couple welcomed a set of twins, Mady and Cara, who are now 22. And in 2004, the ex-couple welcomed now 19-year-old sextuplets, Alexis, Aaden, Hannah, Collin, Joel, and Leah.

This year, Mady and Cara have gone on to receive their college degrees from separate schools in New York, while the sextuplets graduated from separate high schools. While all of his children have gone on to hit milestones this year, Gosselin is admitting that he’s been having to find different coping mechanisms; as he’s been going through it as a parent who is no longer that close to all of his children.

Speaking with PEOPLE Magazine about his estranged relationship with some of his kids, Gosselin admitted, “I had eight graduations this year. only attended one. The only kids I see and talk to are Hannah and Collin. So I’ve been pretty much estranged from Mady and Cara for nine years.”

In August 2021, it was reported that Hannah and Collin moved in with their father full-time. Giving an update on the arrangements, Gosselin went on to explain to PEOPLE that the other four of the sextuplets (Aaden, Leah, Joel and Alexis) still live with their mom.

Speaking on his estrangement from his six children (the twins and the four from the sextuplets), Gosselin added, “At first it was very difficult — but now it’s, you know — you hope for the best, but you don’t dwell on it, you know what I mean? Maybe we’ll develop a relationship in the future, but yeah. I can’t put all my eggs in one basket like I used to and then be upset about it.”

Despite his estrangement from the four children of the sextuplets, and his twins, Gosselin has been sure to celebrate everyone’s birthdays on social media when their big days arrive. Gosselin also shared that he and his ex-wife Kate have not spoken “in years.”

However, he did reveal that they both were present for Hannah and Collin’s high school graduation. He said, “Hannah invited Kate and… we saw each other, but there was a whole football field between us. I talked to Hannah and Collin before graduation to make sure that it was gonna be cordial.”

The hit TLC show ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’ aired for five seasons, beginning in 2007 and ending in 2017. Following the Gosselin’s divorce, the show was renamed to ‘Kate Plus 8.’
