Johnny Depp Defends Giving Daughter Lily-Rose Weed When She Was Just 13 Years Old

On Tuesday, Johnny Depp took the stand in a UK court as part of his three-week-long case against the newspaper, “The Sun,” which accused him of being beating his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

During the Tuesday testimony, the actor discussed his drug usage over the years, and at one point revealed that he supplied his then-13-year-old daughter with marijuana. As shocking as that may sound, Depp said he was being a “responsible parent” and claims he took all the right steps when his daughter Lily-Rose Depp — a preteen at the time, was curious about the drug.

While in court, he shared a story about Lily — now 21 years old — who told him she went to a party where someone passed her a joint. That’s when he opened up his personal supply, saying that he would rather her use his own “trustworthy” stash instead of a stranger’s weed that could potentially be laced.

“My daughter was 13 years old and, as we all know, at 11, 12, 13 years old, when you go to high school parties you are approached by people who will want to give you drink because they’re drinking,” He said per PEOPLE Magazine citing Metro UK. “I don’t want a 13-year-old going into some sort of paranoid tailspin,” said Depp. “I want her to trust me. If my daughter says she was ready, she was ready. I wanted to make sure the settings were perfection, put on family TV, fill the refrigerator with ice cream, fill the freezer, make a situation where the experience is as pleasant as possible.” Despite allegedly giving the drugs to Lily, he made it clear that he “never encouraged my daughter to use marijuana.”

The subject came up in court only because The Sun article in question cited Depp’s drug use as a big problem. Although Depp admitted on Tuesday that he has taken “every drug known to man” over the years, he has denied ever assaulting Heard. “If this is wrong in your eyes, I appreciate what you think,” he said in court. “But I was raising a daughter, and I was being a responsible parent so far as I’m concerned.”

While social media users were taken back by his comments per the Metro UK, there were a number of people who commended him for stepping up for his daughter.
