John Legend is opening up about how his marriage to Chrissy Teigen was “tested” after the couple suffered a miscarriage in September 2020. As fans will recall, Chrissy and John broke the news in a series of heartbreaking snaps showing Chrissy weeping after learning about the loss of their baby boy Jack. And in a recent interview with The Guardian, the All Of Me hitmaker touched on how the experience of a miscarriage impacted the pair’s relationship.

“We were tested,” John explained. “It was a tragedy. But I think it strengthened our resolve and our resilience because we were there for each other. We came out even more sure of who we were as a couple and as a family.” The Grammy winner also addressed critics who didn’t agree with Chrissy’s decision to share candid photos of herself crying on a hospital bed as she opened up about the miscarriage.

“I was worried but our instinct was to do it because people knew we were pregnant and Chrissy felt like she needed to tell the story completely about what happened. It was a powerful and brave thing that Chrissy did to share that because it made so many people feel like they were seen and that they weren’t alone.” After Chrissy and John lost little Jack, the model shared the devastating news with fans on her own social media page with a series of black and white photos showing her profusely crying at the hospital.

The caption that followed was just as heartbreaking, as Chrissy penned, “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

The lengthy message was followed with Chrissy explaining how she and John came up with their name Jack for their baby before dedicating the final few paragraphs to their son and thanking everybody who had expressed their support during such a difficult and painful time.

But everyday can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”

John and Chrissy have been married since 2013 and are parents to two children, six-year-old daughter Luna, and four-year-old son Miles.
