According to a report by The Hill, President Joe Biden has told former President Barack Obama that he will be running again in 2024. “Biden] wants to run, and he’s clearly letting everyone know,” one of the sources said. “I believe he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Trump. I don’t think he thinks there’s anyone in the Democratic Party who can beat Trump, and that’s the biggest factor,” The Hill quotes. While it was not clear when Biden told Obama about his plans, Obama visited the White House earlier this month, to celebrate the Affordable Care Act.
Biden has publicly suggested this many times before. Just last month during an overseas trip to Brussels, Biden said he would welcome a rematch against Trump despite not committing to running. “We’re a long way off in elections — a long way off,” Biden said at the time. “My focus of any election is on making sure that we retain the House and the United States Senate so that I have the room to continue to do the things that I’ve been able to do in terms of grow the economy and deal in a rational way with American foreign policy and lead the world.”
As the news site notes, the White House did not provide comment on the conversations between Biden and Obama. However, a Biden adviser pointed to the president’s public comments that he intends to run again. Biden, 79, was the oldest president to take office at 78 and would be 82 at the start of his second term if he were to secure his spot again.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has hinted that he will run again. We did it twice, and we’ll do it again,” Trump told a crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, back in February, while falsely claiming again that he won the 2020 election. “We’re going to be doing it again a third time.” Joe Biden has shown no signs of being intimidated by Trump, as the prez said in March that he would be “very fortunate” if former President Donald Trump decides to run against him in the 2024 presidential election.
While we wait and see how that all plays out, as of Monday, Polls suggest big support for the president amid rising inflation and conflict in Ukraine. His approval ratings currently stand at an average of 41.8%, which is narrowly higher than that of Trump’s at the same point in his presidency, according to a compilation of polls by FiveThirtyEight.
