After several cases of salmonella were recently reported, the makers of Jif Peanut Butter, J.M. Smucker Co., have recalled several products sold in the U.S. Of the products recalled were Jif’s many types and sizes of peanut butter, including creamy, crunchy, natural, and reduced fat.

FDA Recalls Jif Peanut Butter After Several Cases of Salmonella
In cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), J.M. Smucker Co., whose facility is based in Lexington, Kentucky, has recalled several loads of peanut butter distributed nationwide in retail stores and other outlets from their Lexington, KY location.
The lot codes range from 1274425 – 2140425. The codes are included alongside the “best-if-used-by” date on each product. (See full list below)
The peanut butter maker’s company warns that if consumers have products matching any of the codes they’ve made public, they should dispose of the products immediately.
Meanwhile, consumers who have questions or would like to report adverse reactions are encouraged to visit www.jif.com/contact-us or call 800-929-9980 Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM EST.

Where are the cases of salmonella-contaminated Jif Peanut Butter?
Currently, the FDA has listed 14 cases of a salmonella contamination, with 2 hospitalizations. The last illness onset was reported on May 1, 2022.
The states with cases include Arkansas (1), Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Massachusetts (1), Montana (1), Ohio (1), North Carolina (1), New York (1), South Carolina (1), Texas (2), Virginia (1) and Washington State (1).

What is salmonella? What are the symptoms?
Now salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Those who are healthy that are infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may contain blood), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
On rare occasions, the infection can result in the organism making its way into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, like arterial infections (aka infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
