Jennifer Lopez reportedly embraces a new chapter in her life amid her divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage. A source close to the star says this has been her most challenging year, and she didn’t want to file for divorce.

The couple officially separated on April 6, and although ending their marriage was a tough decision, Lopez is staying optimistic, according to PEOPLE. “She was very upset about it, but true to her positive outlook on life, she’s moving forward. Instead of feeling like she’s fallen flat on her face, she believes it was meant to be. She’s taking this time to focus on herself,” the source explained. They continued to say, “Jennifer knows she lives a privileged life and is grateful for the beautiful memories she shared with Ben.”

Despite the split, the former couple have been seen together on multiple occasions, including taking their children to lunch in Los Angeles on September 14. Lopez shares 16-year-old twins Emme and Max with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Affleck has three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.

The former couple have reportedly been staying busy with their separate endeavors as Lopez appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival in September to support her upcoming film, Unstoppable, which was produced by Affleck and Matt Damon. “I really got to talk to her about how she felt about being a mom, being a mom to a child that was handicapped, being a person who was really kind of lost and in bad relationships and had to kind of figure herself out while she was raising these five kids,” she said about her character Judy Robles.
