Jeff Bezos’ Ex-Wife MacKenzie Scott Donates $1.7B To HBCUs & More

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos‘ ex-wife MacKenzie Scott has donated $1.7 billion to a number of HBCUs, foundations, charities and more since her divorce last year, which left her with a 4% stake in the company, roughly $35 billion at the time.

While taking to blog site Medium, Scott reveals, “Last year I pledged to give the majority of my wealth back to the society that helped generate it, to do it thoughtfully, to get started soon, and to keep at it until the safe is empty.”

She continues to provide a list of places she’s donated to, as wells a total amount of what’s she given. $586.7M to racial equity. $46M to LGBTQ+ equity. $133M to gender equity. $399.5M to economic mobility. $55M to empathy and bridging divides. $72M to functional democracy. $128.3M to public health. $130M to global development. $125M to climate change. Among the HBCUs are: Hampton University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Thurgood Marshall College, Tuskegee University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Howard University, who received $40M, their largest gift ever.
