JAY-Z, Yo Gotti & Team Roc File Class-Action Lawsuit Against Mississippi Prison Over Health Conditions

After filing two lawsuits earlier this year against a Mississippi prison over poor health conditions amid COVID-19, JAY-ZYo Gotti, and Team Roc have now filed a class-action lawsuit against the new Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Nathan Burl Cain and prison healthcare provider Centurion.

In their suit, positioned on behalf of 227 Mississppi inmates at Parchman Prison, they urge Cain and Centurion to address the alleged subpar living conditions their clients are subjected to, and are killed from, amid COVID-19, including a lock of testing protocol, social distancing, PPE and more.

Speaking on the suit, Yo Gotti says, “The situation in Parchman is dire. More and more of the incarcerated population are reaching out for help and pleading for immediate medical attention, especially as the coronavirus threatens their lives. Mississippi Governor Reeves, Commissioner Burl Cain and Centene—as the parent company of Parchman’s healthcare provider Centurion—can’t continue to neglect this tragedy and let the death toll rise. We will hold them accountable and fight for the rights of the incarcerated.”

In addition to poor health conditions, the complaint notes that Parchman has been “understaffed an underfunded for decades,” thus resulting in the inadequate healthcare, overuse of isolation and “constant violence.”
