Last week was already heavy. We saw Spirit Airlines completely fold, leaving 17,000 people out of work and wondering how they’re gonna pay their rent. One of those former employees reached out to Makeup star James Charles, probably desperate and hoping a millionaire might have a heart. However, he didn’t.
Instead of just hitting “delete” or “ignore” like a normal person, James decided to record a whole video mocking this girl’s struggle. He literally called her a “lazy piece of s–t.” He started the video by reading her DM in a voice that was pure sarcasm: “I just got a DM on here from a girl that said, ‘Good morning, James. I know you’ll probably never see this, but if you could just take one minute to read it would really mean a lot to me. I’m really struggling right now because Spirit Airlines just filed for bankruptcy and I have lost her job. Here’s a GoFundMe link. Any donations help.’”
Now, instead of having an ounce of empathy for someone who just lost their livelihood, James decided to give her some unwanted “career advice” that absolutely nobody asked for.
“I’m sure they do, sweetheart. I’m sure they do. You know what else would help you? Getting another job. Yeah, try that. Because in the time that it took you to copy and paste the same f–k ass message to myself, who you don’t follow, by the way, and probably a hundred other influencers and celebrities, you could’ve applied for a hundred other jobs. But you didn’t, ‘cause you’re a lazy piece of s–t, and you’re entitled, and you think that influencers and celebrities should fund your life for you. Why would I ever help you?”
The part that really gets me? James seemed more pressed about the fact that she didn’t hit that “follow” button than the fact that she’s broke. He basically hinted that if she was a “real fan,” he might’ve dropped a coin. But since she isn’t part of his “sisters” squad, she’s just a target for his attitude.
He kept the energy going, saying:
“You’re not a fan, you don’t even follow me, you’ve never supported me, this is your first time DMing. And you think that I’m gonna send you money because you lost your job?! Oh my God, welcome to the real world, sweetheart. People lose their jobs every f–king day. And you’re white, pretty, and able-bodied; you’re in a much better position than a lot of other people out here who are trying clearly much harder to make a better life for themselves. Why would I f–king help you?!”
He even went as far as to say he’d only help if she had some “rare genetic disease.” According to James, simply being unemployed in a crashing economy isn’t a good enough reason to ask for help.
“I’m not f–king helping you. All you did was lost your job. Welcome to the real world.”
The video has been deleted, but the internet keeps receipts, honey. Screen recordings are everywhere, and people are rightfully dragging him for being completely out of touch.
It’s the lack of grace for me. To be sitting on millions and yelling at a woman who just lost her job in a mass layoff is just nasty work. People are calling the video tasteless, cruel, and a prime example of why folks are tired of influencer culture. Whew!
