As America was shocked by the sight of Will Smith smacking the jokes out of comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, his wife Jada Pinkett Smith was surprised by something else…

While recalling the infamous moment with Hoda Kotb in an NBC News primetime special as she promoted her upcoming memoir, “Worthy,” Jada reveals that she was caught off guard when Will yelled “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth” after Rock made a joke at her alopecia.

Now some may question why as Will seemed to have been defending her at that moment. However, Jada shockingly revealed that Will had not called her his “wife” for a while before that! “First of all, I’m really shocked, because mind you, I’m not there. We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time,” Jada explained. “I’m like, ‘What is going on right now? Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth?’ I’m really worried for Will because I don’t know what’s going on.”

In an earlier interview, Jada made a shocking revelation about her relationship status with Will. She said despite looking like a happily married couple, they had actually been separated for seven years. Despite that she says, Jada went on to admit, “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us,” she told PEOPLE.

While speaking more with the outlet she touched on the Oscars slap and said she too was shocked about what went down. She even admitted that she really thought it was a skit when it all happened but realized Will was serious when he came back to his seat and uttered the words, “Are you okay?”

“I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ ” Like many people watching the incident unfold on live TV, she didn’t believe it was real at first. “I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him,’ ” Jada, recalls. “It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”

Later that night will won the Oscar for Best Actor and delivered an emotional five-minute speech. However, he later resigned from the Academy amid backlash and the Academy followed up by banning Will from its membership and from attending events such as the Oscars for 10 years.
