It is reported that Giacomo Chiapparini, a 74-year-old man in northern Italy, was crushed to death and buried under thousands of wheels of a Parmesan-style hard cheese called Grana Padano. It is reported that some 15,000 wheels of cheese had fallen atop the man, with each weighing about 88 pounds.
Antonio Dusi was one of several firefighters who rushed to the scene on Sunday (August 6). The following day, Dusi spoke with news outlets in Rome. He revealed that Chiapparini was checking the ripening of the cheese wheels when a shelf broke in his warehouse on Sunday.
Dusi said that when the shelf collapsed, it caused a domino effect that brought down thousands of wheels of cheese in the warehouse. Tragically, all of the cheese wheels that came tumbling down crushed Chiapparini to death and buried his body.

Dusi said, “[Rescue crews] had to move the cheeses and the shelves by hand.” The firefighter also said that it had taken “about 12 hours” until rescuers could finally locate the body of Chiapparini.
Dusi noted that the wheels of cheese had been stored on metal shelves, with the highest one standing at about 33 feet tall. One local resident also spoke with Italian news outlets and said that they heard the scary moment when the shelves collapsed, and noted that it had sounded “like thunder.”

Another neighbor in the area said that Chiapparini was a “very supportive and generous” individual. They also noted that sadly, he had lost a child decades ago.
Elsewhere, it is reported that the economic damage caused in Chiapparini’s warehouse, which is located in a small town called Romano di Lombardia near Bergamo, is estimated to be about $7.7 million.

Inside of the warehouse, Chiapparini was storing about 25,000 wheels of Grana Padano, which is described to be a very popular hard cheese in Italy, that closely resembles Parmesan cheese.
However, there are some differences like how the wheels for Grana Padano are aged for a minimum of nine months, as opposed to 12 months for Parmigiano-Reggiano. Some food experts state the Grana Padano is often looked at as a worthy alternative for Parmesan cheese, especially since it can offer an additional “sweetness” to one’s meal.
