As we previously reported, Potter, 49, shot Wright, a 20-year-old black man, after he tried to flee cops seeking to arrest him on a weapons warrant during a traffic spot in April in Brooklyn Center. Body-cam video shown to jurors in the case depicts the distraught officer, who has claimed she just “accidentally” pulled her gun instead of her Taser that day.
“We were struggling, we were trying to keep him from driving away, it just went chaotic,” Potter said of the traffic stop. “I remember yelling ‘Taser! Taser! Taser!’ and nothing happened and then, he told me I shot him,” she said about another officer telling her she shot Wright. As the New York Post notes, after discussing the fatal encounter, she began shaking then taking a break for water.
It was the first time the former Brooklyn Center officer has publicly spoken in detail about the fatal shooting. Prosecutors now have to prove that Potter acted with recklessness or culpable negligence if they are to win a conviction on the manslaughter charges she faces.
