Not feeling the new Tiktok-inspired vibe on Instagram? Well, you won’t have to be bothered by it anymore soon as the social media company plans to roll back its new changes.
A Meta spokesperson just told @TheHollywoodReporter, “Based on our findings and community feedback, we’re pausing the full-screen test on Instagram so we can explore other options, and we’re temporarily decreasing the number of recommendations you see in your feed so we can improve the quality of your experience. We recognize that changes to the app can be an adjustment, and while we believe that Instagram needs to evolve as the world changes, we want to take the time to make sure we get this right.”
As we previously reported, Instagram has been facing tons of backlash over its new rolled-out features which included a full-screen feed that emphasized short-form videos on Reels and an increase in recommended posts from accounts that users are not following. Stars like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have urged Instagram to return to its normal layout. However, Instagram head Adam Mosseri responded and explained why they initially were switching things up.
Mosseri posted a video on Twitter Tuesday to address the concerns and criticisms. He said, “We’re going to continue to support photos. It’s part of our heritage. That said, I need to be honest — I do believe that more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time. We see this even if we change nothing.”
“We’re also going to need to evolve because the world is changing quickly and we’re going to have to change along with it,” Mosseri added.
Very adamant about his decision, he also said in a tweet, “One thing I hear a lot is people asking to see more friend content in Feed. I’d love for there to be more friend content in feed, but all the growth in photos and videos from friends has been in stories and in DMs.”
He went to say, “We will continue to show photos and videos from friends towards the top of Feed whenever we can, but the best way to keep up with friends seems to be with the other parts of Instagram.”
In a new statement this Thursday about the pause, Mosseri said, “I’m glad we took a risk — if we’re not failing every once in a while, we’re not thinking big enough or bold enough,” Mosseri told the reporter Casey Newton for his Platformer newsletter. “But we definitely need to take a big step back and regroup. [When] we’ve learned a lot, then we come back with some sort of new idea or iteration. So we’re going to work through that.”
