Inmates Forced to Run Rikers Island Prison After Guards Don’t Show Up

The world has officially lost it!

According to multiple reports, inmates at Rikers island had to run their own prison after guards failed to show up for more than 24 hours.

The New York Daily News reports that Brooklyn rapper 2 Milly claims that two units at Rikers Island were left unsupervised over 24 hours.

“I’ve been answering the phones,” the rapper said, while other prisoners have been helping each other with zoom calls and getting transportation organized for court dates.

“We are really running the dorm by ourselves. I’ve never seen anything like this,” Milly added.

When asked to comment, the Department of Correction officials declined, but did admit to having a personnel shortage, as many guards have called in sick and some are just unavailable.

In July alone, 3,500 of Rikers’ 8,500 officers called in sick or were medically exempt from working with prisoners. Another 2,300 just didn’t come in to work.

“These gaps are a regular occurrence and it’s a prime reason why officers are being attacked and inmates aren’t getting the services they need,” a Correction Department source said.
