The mother has been identified as Aaliyah Lykins of Muncie, IN and she is facing one count of reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, and one count of neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony.

Before this, on October 9, 2023, Lykins was breastfeeding her newborn baby in bed. She allegedly fell asleep and woke up with her 14-day-old daughter in cardiac arrest, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Fox 59.

Officials report that this is the second time that this has happened to Lykins. According to court documents, Lykins’ other child was pronounced dead on October 30, 2020. He was found co-sleeping with his mother in her bed.

At the time, police officers reported that Lykins told them that “she should not have placed [the child] in bed with her and that she knew it was wrong.” Ultimately, the Indiana woman was not charged in connection with that 2020 case, despite investigators preparing a probable cause affidavit.

In Lykins’ second incident, on October 9, 2023, Muncie Fire Department officials, along with the Muncie Police Department, were dispatched to a home in East Muncie. The call reported a cardiac arrest of an infant. When officials from each department arrived, the child was “found to be limp, with no signs of respiration,” and later the two-week-old baby was pronounced dead.

According to the court documents, Lykins made the call to the 9-1-1 dispatcher and reportedly told them that she was breastfeeding the infant and fell asleep. While speaking with EMS personnel, the documents also said that Lykins reportedly told them, “Oh no, I did it again.” The documents added that “Lykins was fully aware of the danger of co-sleeping with her infant… as she had a prior born child die while co-sleeping.”
