Julious Johnican, of the George Washington Carver School No. 87 in Indianapolis, has been named in a new lawsuit alleging that he and several other staff members were behind a “fight club” for students which allowed the abuse of a 7-year-old student with disabilities. According to the suit, filed on Thursday (April 18), the others listed are Indiana Public Schools Superintendent Aleesia Johnson, the school’s principal Mary Kapcoe, the assistant principal, a substitute teacher, and a behavioral consultant are also named in the suit.

Weeks into the 2023-24 school year, the 7-year-old student told his mother that his teacher allowed other students to physically abuse him in class. In the lawsuit, it’s alleged that former Indiana teacher, Julious Johnican, facilitated several attacks where the student was “thrown to the ground, struck, slapped, and hit in the head repeatedly,” including two instances where Johnican allegedly held the boy up as his classmates punched, hit, and kicked him.

The lawsuit further alleges that the Indiana teacher abused the student with disabilities for “his own amusement” and as a “disciplinary measure,” and that he also created a “reprehensible ‘fight club’ type” environment in the class. One of the aforementioned school staff members is also accused in the lawsuit of telling the boy he was “demonically possessed.” Allegedly, the staff member told the boy that students with special needs “were demonically possessed” and needed to be baptized.

In addition to the boy confessing to his mother about the alleged abuse suffered, Johnican allegedly accidentally exposed the abuse to the child’s parents while attempting to show them a video of his classroom. When confronted by the child’s parents, Johnican allegedly “dismissed” the claims and alleged that the boy was a liar with mental illness.

However, as mentioned, the lawsuit alleged that the Indiana teacher accidentally exposed himself to the boy’s parents during a meeting about the alleged abuse. The teacher was trying to clear his name by showing the parents a video of his “normal classroom environment,” but he instead played a video of the boy allegedly getting abused. As the parents reportedly attempted to grab the teacher’s phone, he accidentally increased the volume and that’s when they realized he was the one allegedly “encouraging the beating of their disabled 7-year-old son.”

According to the Indianapolis Police, Johnican has not yet been charged with any crimes, however, they are investigating all of the claims made in the new lawsuit.
