A man from Indiana, recently pardoned by President Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot, has been shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy while allegedly resisting arrest.

Matthew Huttle, 42, from Hobart, was shot during a traffic stop near the Jasper/Pulaski county lines on Sunday afternoon. A deputy from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department pulled Huttle over on State Road 14 around 4:15 p.m.

According to Indiana State Police, the traffic stop escalated when the deputy tried to arrest Huttle, who allegedly put up a fight. This confrontation led to the deputy firing his weapon, resulting in Huttle’s death.

State police reported that Huttle had a firearm on him during the stop. However, details about what led to the altercation and the charges against Huttle remain unclear.

Federal sources confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that Huttle had recently received a pardon from Trump. He and his uncle, Dale Huttle from Crown Point, were part of the January 6 chaos at the Capitol. Matthew was eventually tracked down and arrested in Boise, Idaho. The FBI noted that he was inside the Capitol for about 10 minutes but lingered on the grounds for several hours.

“I have no regrets. I will not say I’m sorry,” Dale Huttle stated regarding their involvement in the riot.

Both Huttles faced consequences for their actions, with Matthew receiving a six-month federal prison sentence followed by a year of supervised release. His prison term was set to end on July 17, 2024, according to federal records.

However, they were spared the full brunt of their sentences after Trump pardoned all those involved in the January 6 events. U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of the president from South Carolina, openly criticized the pardons, a sentiment shared by many across the political spectrum.

Matthew Huttle isn’t the first to encounter trouble soon after receiving a pardon. Just last week, a man from Florida involved in the January 6 riot was arrested on federal gun charges a day after his pardon.

Indiana State Police are currently investigating the shooting that led to Matthew Huttle’s death. The deputy who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway, which is standard procedure.
